WHO IS OFFENDED AT BEING SAVED ETERNALLY? THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE PRODIGAL FATHER, THE LOST SON AND THE OFFENDED BROTHER.
I still have John 6:25-71 in view. Take note while you enjoy this.
It is in Luke 15.
There Jesus told three parables.
The Lost Sheep. The Lost Coin, And The Lost Son.
We shall centre on The Parable of The Lost (or Prodigal) Son today.
First, it is important that we appreciate the background of these three parables.
Luke 15 (KJV)
1 Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.
2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
3 And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
Once again, the issue is about how the experts in law viewed the grace of our Lord Jesus. Any how, take note of this; 'AND HE SPAKE THIS PARABLE UNTO THEM, SAYING,'
So Jesus was addressing the accusers; the Pharisees and Scribes.
THREE LESSONS FROM THE THREE PARABLES.
1. GOD IS FOCUSED ON THE LOST ONE, NOT THE NINETY-NINE, THE NINE OR THE 'UNLOST' BROTHER.
4 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
8 Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry
2. THE SINNERS AND PUBLICANS REPRESENT THE 'LOST ONE'. WHILE THE PHARISEES AND THE SCRIBES REPRESENT THE 'UNLOST'.
John 9:
39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
3. ONLY THE LOST CAN BE FOUND. ONLY SINNERS ARE SAVED; NOT THE SELF-RIGHTEOUS.
Mat. 9:
12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
LET US RETURN TO THE PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL SON.
WHO IS THE PRODIGAL; THE FATHER OR THE SON?
PRODIGAL means wasteful. lavish. extravagant. reckless. freely. excessive.
JESUS CALLED THE SON 'LOST', WE CHOSE TO CALL HIM 'PRODIGAL' BECAUSE OF THIS STATEMENT; Luke 15:13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
BUT WHO IS EVEN MORE WASTEFUL?
WHEN THE SON RETURNED...
LET US DEAL WITH THIS 'RETURN'
BECAUSE JESUS SAID HE 'was lost, and is found'. MEANING THE FATHER ACTUALLY DID THE FINDING. THE BOY WAS DEAD. YOU CAN DIE BY YOURSELF, I MEAN, YOU CAN GO KILL YOURSELF. BUT I DARE YOU TO RAISE YOURSELF UP AFTER. SO IT TAKES SOMETHING OUTSIDE YOU TO BRING YOU BACK ALIVE. YOU CAN GET LOST, BUT IF YOU ARE FOUND, IT IS EXTERNAL TO YOU.
SO MAN WAS LOST, MAN COULD NOT FIND HIMSELF. GOD DID THE FINDING.
OKAY WHAT ABOUT 'Luke 15:17 And when he came to himself, he said..." ?
THAT IS THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED TO US AND WE SAY IN ERROR 'I GAVE MY LIFE TO CHRIST'. NO, SIR. GOD GAVE YOU TO CHRIST. SEE THESE;
John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand
John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
SO WHEN THIS SON WAS FOUND...
DID YOU NOTICE THAT THE FATHER RESTORED HIM AS HIS SON? MEANING HE HAS HIS INHERITANCE INTACT!
SO WHO IS MORE WASTEFUL?
THE FIRST ADAM CONFERRED ON US A CERTAIN INHERITANCE WHICH HIS FALL DID NOT TAKE AWAY.
FOR INSTANCE, DID YOU KNOW GOD NEVER CURSED MAN DURING THAT INCIDENCE IN EDEN? LET ME SHOW YOU AGAIN.
Gen 3:
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: CURSED IS THE GROUND FOR THY SAKE; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
SO GOD NEVER CURSED THE MAN OR THE WOMAN. HENCE, MAN RETAINED CERTAIN BLESSING OR INHERITANCE WHICH OF COURSE, HE SQUANDERED WHEN HE WANDERED OUT OF GOD'S PRESENCE (EDEN) TYPIFIED BY HIS FALL.
SO WHEN THE MAN IS FOUND IN CHRIST, HE IS NOT JUST RESTORED, HE IS GIVEN A FAR BETTER INHERITANCE. NOW THAT IS 'WASTEFUL' OF GOD. WHAT MANNER OF PRODIGAL GRACE IS THIS?
TAKE NOTE;
THE LOST SON BECAME FOUND. HIS SONSHIP RESTORED. THAT WATCH IT CLOSELY. HIS FATHER GAVE HIM THREE THINGS- THAT WE DID NOT HEAR THAT THE ELDER BROTHER HAD.
Luke 15:22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
THREE ARTICLES OF THE FATHER TO THE SON
THE BEST ROBE. A RING. SHOES.
BEST ROBE; SIGNIFIES CHRIST'S RIGHTEOUSNESS.
The boy must have returned in rags. He was with pigs! So that represent the best of any man's righteousness.
Isaiah 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
NOT JUST A ROBE. THE BEST. WHOSE RIGHTEOUSNESS BEAT CHRIST'S?
RING: REPRESENTS THE HOLY SPIRIT. A RING CARRIED A SEAL THOSE DAYS. THE FATHER LITERALLY GAVE THE LOST SON HIS SIGNATURE. THIS IS THE HOLY SPIRIT WHICH IS THE SEAL OF OUR REDEMPTION.
Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
2 Corinthians 1:22
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
SHOES: REPRESENT SERVICE. YOU SEE, IT WAS NORMAL FOR A SON TO SERVE HIS FATHER. BUT IT DOES NOT MAKE HIM A SERVANT. SERVANTS DO NOT WEAR SHOES OR SANDALS IN THE HOUSE BACK THEN. AND SANDALS WERE MORE COMMON. SO, IT MIGHT JUST BE THAT THE ELDER BROTHER HAD SANDALS ON. WHILE THE LOST GUY HAD SHOES.
LET US ESTABLISH SERVICE.
Mal 3:17 And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
REMEMBER THE ELDER BROTHER EVEN SAID...
Luke 15:29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee...
SHOES REPRESENTS ROYAL SERVICE.
FOR INSTANCE, THE MAJOR ASSIGNMENT CHRIST GAVE US IS TO PREACH THE GOSPEL. OKAY SEE HOW GOSPEL IS DESCRIBED HERE; Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace
FEET SHOD with the ... gospel...
THE SHOES (OR SANDALS) ON THAT FEET WILL DISTINGUISH THE SON AMONG THE SERVANT. OR EVEN THE PREFERRED SON AMONG THE OFFENDED BROTHER.
SO, IT WAS THE LOST SON THAT SEEMED TO GET IT ALL.
SO, IT PAYS TO BE LOST. IS IT NOT?
THE LOST SINNER IS FOUND IN CHRIST GRACE ALONE- NOT IN THE LAW OR IN HIS WORKS. BUT IN CHRIST'S FINISHED WORKS.
THE BROTHER WAS OFFENDED.
REMEMBER, THE BROTHER REPRESENTS THE PHARISEES AND SCRIBES. THE LEGALISTS.
WHY WAS HE OFFENDED? SEE IT.
Luke 15:29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
TAKE NOTE: Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment:
HE KEEPS THE LAW. HE CANNOT BE LOST. TOO COLLECTED TO BE LOST. HE IS A PERFORMER PAR EXCELLENCE. HE IS SELF-RIGHTEOUS.
THE FATHER CONSOLED HIM WITH THESE WORDS; Luke 15:31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. BUT WE ALREADY KNOW WHO REALLY HAD IT ALL. THE BEST ROBE. THE RING. AND THE SHOES.
TAKE ABRAHAM'S BLESSING OF ISAAC AS EXAMPLE'
Gen 25:
5 And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac.
6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts...
SEE HOW ISAAC PUT IT;
Gen 27:37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
MORE SO, ONLY THE LOST SON WAS CELEBRATED.
IN HEAVEN, ONLY THE LOST BUT FOUND WILL BE REJOICED OVER.
selah.
