WHO IS OFFENDED AT BEING SAVED ETERNALLY? JUDAS AND HIS ISSUE WITH CHRIST

John 6:25-71 is still in focus. But we are still building up.

1 Cor 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

AN EVENT TOOK PLACE SHORTLY BEFORE JUDAS FINALLY MADE UP HIS MIND TO BETRAY JESUS. HE BETRAYED CHRIST ON THE PASSOVER NIGHT, BUT JUST BEFORE THEN, AN EVENT TOOK PLACE.

Mat 26:

6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.

8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?

9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.

10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.

11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.

12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,

15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

FROM THAT TIME...

THAT WAS THE EVENT THAT SEALED HIS DECISION TO BETRAY CHRIST.

LET US SEE JUDAS PROPERLY IN THAT EVENT AS REPORTED BY JOHN

John 12 (KJV)

Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

4 THEN SAITH ONE OF HIS DISCIPLES, JUDAS ISCARIOT, SIMON'S SON, WHICH SHOULD BETRAY HIM,

5 WHY WAS NOT THIS OINTMENT SOLD FOR THREE HUNDRED PENCE, AND GIVEN TO THE POOR?

6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

SO WE SEE THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY JUDAS THAT GOT OFFENDED.

THE SAME AROMA THAT SPREAD JOY AND SALVATION INTO THAT ROOM SPREAD OFFENSE INTO THE HEART OF JUDAS.

That is still happening. The True Gospel that spread life unto many is getting some offended.

2 Cor 2:

15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

JESUS SAID WHAT THE WOMAN DID WAS A TYPOLOGY FOR 'THIS GOSPEL'.

BUT ALL THAT JUDAS SAW WAS 'THIS WASTE'.

YOU SEE, LET ME DRIVE IT HOME HERE.

THE GOSPEL JESUS BROUGHT APPEARED WASTEFUL TO THE JEWS. JUDAS WAS AN UNREPENTANT JEW. A STRONG LEGALIST, WHO THOUGH FOLLOWED JESUS COULD NOT COME TO TERMS WITH 'THIS WASTE' OF A GOSPEL.

THE GOSPEL OF GRACE APPEARS WASTEFUL TO THE LEGALISTS. THEY PERCEIVE THE AROMA AND SMELL LICENCE TO SIN, WHAT IS GIVING LIFE UNTO MANY

READ THIS ACCOUNT BY WILLIAM BACLAY;

'There is a certain extravagance in love. The alabastar phial of perfume was meant to be used drop by drop; it was meant to last for years, perhaps even for a lifetime; but in a moment of utter devotion the woman pour it on the head of Jesus. Love does not stop nicely to calculate the less or more... WIth a kind of divine extravagance, love gives everything it has...'

THAT EXTRAVAGANCE IN LOVE IS CALLED GRACE. IT IS SO MUCH IT OFFENDS THE LEGALISTS.

BACK TO JUDAS.

AT WHAT POINT WAS HE REALLY OFFENDED?

I MEAN, AT WHAT POINT DID HE SAY IN HIS MIND 'I JUST HAVE TO DO THIS. I AM BORN FOR THIS' ?

IT WAS NOT REALLY AFTER THE ALABASTAR JAR WAS BROKEN. IT WAS AFTER JESUS EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED.

SEE IT AGAIN.

Mat 26:

12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

14 THEN one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,

BUT PLEASE LET US RETURN TO THAT STORY.

JESUS ALREADY SAID HE WOULD DIE.

HE SAID THAT OINTMENT WAS TO ANOINT HIS BODY FOR BURIAL.

IT WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME JUDAS WOULD HEAR JESUS TALK ABOUT HIS DEATH. SO, BETRAYING HIM TO BE KILLED WOULD NOT MAKE MUCH SENSE.

I WILL TELL YOU WHY JUDAS BETRAYED CHRIST.

HE WANTED TO GIVE THE MESSIAH THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO IT THE OLD COVENANT WAY. UP TILL NOW, THE JEWISH COMMUNITY DO NOT SEE JESUS AS MESSIAH BUT A GOOD MAN. THEIR MESSIAH WAS SUPPOSED TO COME CONQUERING ALL THE ENEMIES. THIS WAS THE MINDSET OF JUDAS.

IT WAS THE SAME MINDSET THAT PETER HAD UNTIL CHRIST PRAYED FOR HIM. REMEMBER BEFORE SATAN ENTERED JUDAS, HE HAD ENTERED PETER. SEE IT HERE.

Mat 16:

21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

PETER HAD JUST SEEN THE REVELATION THAT JESUS WAS THE CHRIST.

THEN CHRIST BEGAN TO TALK ABOUT HIS SUFFERINGS, AND PETER COULD NOT RELATE WITH THAT. MESSIAH ? SUFFER? DIE? NO NOW.

AND JESUS IDENTIFIED THAT SPIRIT AS SATAN.

THE LEGALISTIC SPIRIT IS SATANIC.

WATCH WHAT JESUS SAID TO PETER...

... for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

SAVOUR.

IN THIS GRACE OINTMENT, WHAT DO YOU SAVOUR? THE THINGS OF GOD OR OF MEN? LOVE OR WASTE?

THAT SATANIC SPIRIT THAT RESISTED THE SUFFERING CHRIST; THAT SAME SPIRIT THAT SEES THE GOSPEL OF THE CROSS (THE GOSPEL THAT SAYS THE CROSS SETTLES IT ALL), THAT SAME SPIRIT RESISTED THE APOSTLES AFTER CHRIST ASCENDED. THAT SPIRIT IS STILL HERE RESISTING THE GOSPEL OF GRACE.

OKAY.

WHY, DO YOU THINK, HE REGRETTED HIS ACTION ALMOST IMMEDIATELY?

Mat 27:

3 THEN JUDAS, WHICH HAD BETRAYED HIM, WHEN HE SAW THAT HE WAS CONDEMNED, REPENTED HIMSELF, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.

WHEN HE SAW THAT JESUS WAS ACTUALLY GOING TO BE KILLED, HE REPENTED. NOT THAT HE REPENTED FOR BETRAYING THE MESSIAH. HE REPENTED THAT HE HAD BETRAYED 'AN INNOCENT MAN'. IF HE WAS SURE JESUS WAS JUST A GOOD MAN, HE WOULD NOT HAVE BOTHERED. HE WAS NOT SURE AND WANTED THE BETRAYAL TO THROW THINGS UP.

YOU SEE, JUDAS WAS NOT A BAD MAN. HE WAS A THIEF, YES. BUT NOT TO THE POINT OF KILLING.

HE WOULD NOT BETRAY EVEN AN INNOCENT MAN, HE WANTED TO BETRAY THE MESSIAH. SO THAT THIS MESSIAH COULD PROVE TO THE ENEMIES OF THE JEW ONCE FOR ALL WHAT THE JEWISH SAVIOUR LOOKS LIKE.

EVEN AT THE POINT OF HIS ASCENSION, THE FOLLOWERS STILL BROUGHT UP THE JEWISH MODE OF SALVATION.

Acts 1:

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

IT IS REALLY HARD FOR THE JEWS TO ACCEPT THIS JESUS

THAT CHRIST HAD TO DIE.

IT IS THAT HARD FOR THE LEGALISTS TO ACCEPT THIS GRACE. THAT CHRIST DYING IS ALL THAT SAVES.

I HOPE YOU GOT THE MESSAGE.

JUDAS' PROBLEM WAS THAT HIS MIND WAS ON THE OLD COVENANT MODE OF SALVATION. THAT THE CHRIST WOULD DIE WAS OFFENSIVE TO HIM.

23 So when we preach about Christ dying to save them, the Jews are offended...

THAT WAS WHAT OFFENDED JUDAS.

IT OFFENDED THE JEWS.

IT OFFENDS THE LEGALISTS.

Save yourself from the perdition of Judas.

Receive the Grace of God in Christ Jesus.
